Children’s Eye Health Month Ends When School Starts — Don’t Miss It

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. For Mid-Michigan families, it’s also the calm before the school-year storm.
The calendar’s screaming at you for a reason.
By September, the routines lock in. Back-to-school rush fades. And if your kid has undetected vision problems?
They’ve compensated for weeks. Squinting at the board. Rubbing tired eyes during homework. Skipping lines while reading. Just… normal stuff, right?
Wrong.

Why Children’s Eye Health Month Matters

Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month was established by Prevent Blindness to raise awareness of childhood vision problems, many of which go undetected. 1 in 4 kids has an undiagnosed vision problem. 
Until their first eye exam, kids don’t know what normal vision looks like. They’ve never seen the world sharp. To them, the blur is normal. Headaches are just part of being seven. Sitting close to the TV? Not a problem. Tilting their heads to read? Everyone does that.
Here’s the thing: they can’t complain about something they don’t know exists.
That’s why school vision screenings miss half the battle. They check distance. Maybe near vision if they’re generous. But farsightedness? Astigmatism? Convergence insufficiency? Amblyopia (lazy-eye)? Nope—Not in a 30-second screening.
A pediatric eye exam from Goodrich Optical in Holt digs deeper. Visual acuity at distance  and  near, refractive error, binocular vision tests to see how well the eyes coordinate and focus together, health of the eyes, color vision testing, peripheral fields, contrast sensitivity, and more. What Parents Should Actually Watch For:

• Sitting weirdly close to screens or books
• Tilting or turning the head constantly
• Losing their place while reading (or skipping whole lines)
• Avoiding reading or up-close work entirely
• Excessive eye rubbing during or after reading
• Frequent headache complaints, especially later in the day
• Squinting or closing one eye
• Mentally ‘Checking Out’ during visually demanding activities

None of these say- vision problem. But if you’re seeing two or three? Mention it during the exam.

Waiting until October leaves your child to struggle through the first six weeks; Grades slip. Attention wanders. Teachers wonder if there’s a behavior problem. When it’s just… unfocused vision.
The question isn’t whether your child needs an exam. It’s whether it happens before problems appear—or after they’re already struggling.

Children’s Eye Health Month wraps August 31st. Schools start late August or early September. There’s a narrow window between those dates.
